Learning Mathematics with ‘Origami’

For students who feel that mathematics is as hard as iron, a conducive environment for learning math in an easy, simple, and engaging manner can be created. When mathematics is simplified, students will participate enthusiastically in learning. Former Head of the Mathematics Department at St. Agnes College, Mangalore, Adelaide Saldanha, mentioned that certain math lessons can be taught through models using the ‘Origami’ method. As a resource person, she demonstrated to the students how to create various mathematical concepts through origami models.

Using flat paper, she taught students how to create 3D dimensional concepts, make 24-sided polygons with colorful paper, and create essential patterns and shapes in mathematics, such as dodecahedrons. She also demonstrated the skills of creating math models through crafts, teaching embroidery patterns through math, preparing parabola models on origami sheets, and many other creative techniques.

Alida Noronha was present as an assistant to the resource person. College Principal, Mr. Sunil Pandit, presided over the event and offered his best wishes. Mrs. Dhanalakshmi, Head of the Mathematics Department, along with lecturers Priya and Krishnaprasad, were also present. Math teachers from other colleges and high schools under the S.D.M. institutions attended the event. Lecturer Priya welcomed the gathering, and Krishnaprasad offered thanks and presented the event.

Guest Lecture organized by the English department

“Students are lagging behind in writing skills due to multiple-choice questions,” said Purushotham Shetty, vice principal of Vivekananda PU College, Mundaje. “The art of writing is slowly being lost”. He was speaking at a guest lecture organized by the English department at SDM Residential Pre-University College, Ujire. Shetty shared information about the recent changes in the second PU question paper pattern with students. College principal Sunil Pandit presided over the event. A Session on palm farming for first-year students

SDM Residential Pre-University College’s Eco Club organized a session on palm farming for first-year students. Progressive farmer and former soldier, Kashibettu Krishna Bhat, shared insights on the potential of palm farming in India’s agricultural sector. Bhat emphasized that palm farming will leave a significant impact in the future, providing high returns at minimal investment. He also provided information on cultivating areca, banana, coconut, and beekeeping. College principal Sunil Pandit, Eco Club coordinator Vani M.M., and faculty members attended the event.

“Language transcends all boundaries,” said Vignesh Aithal, assistant professor of the English department at SDM PG Centre, Ujire, on September 26. “First, we must have love and pride for our mother tongue.” He was speaking at a guest lecture organized by the English department at SDM Residential Pre-University College. Vignesh emphasized that students should be mindful of pronunciation while using language to avoid errors. College principal Sunil Pandit presided over the event. Awareness program on prevention and management of alcohol and drug abuse.

Students should develop the ability to lead a self-disciplined life” said Vivek V. Payas, Regional Director of Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Grama Abhivruddhi Yojane. He was speaking at an awareness program on prevention and management of alcohol and drug abuse, organized by the Red Cross. In his 30 years of experience, he has seen many alcoholics and how it has affected their families. He emphasized that no scripture advocates alcohol consumption. The college principal, Sunil Pandit, who presided over the program, advised students to participate in all college activities with dedication and not get addicted to any vices. Winners of various competitions held on the occasion of Krishna Janmashtami were awarded prizes by the chief guests. All students took a pledge to prevent and control alcohol and drug abuse during the program. The program was attended by the college’s vice principal Manish Kumar, Red Cross unit coordinator Prashant Poojari, staff of Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Grama Abhivruddhi Yojane, and teaching and non-teaching staff of the college. English department lecturer Parshwanath Hegde compered the program and welcomed the guests.

Inauguration of Students’ Council 2024-25

The program was inaugurated by Dr. Vikram Shanbhag, cardiologist KMC Mangalore and alumnus of the college. He emphasized the importance of values and leadership in the journey of life. He also stressed the need for continuous learning and hard work to achieve success. The guest of honor, Sri Dhanyakumar, student welfare officer of SDM institution, spoke about the qualities of a leader and the responsibilities that come with leadership. He emphasized the importance of inner strength, vision, and responsibility in achieving success. The principal of the college, Sri Sunil Pandit, presided over the function and administered the oath to the newly elected student council members. He also wished the students well in their future endeavors. physical director of the college Sri Lakshman G.D., welcomed the guests. The vice principal, Sri Manish Kumar, was also present on the occasion. The English department head, Smt. Bhavyashree, compered the program. The student council members, Abhijit Dinesh and Shreyas Gouda, were elected as the president and secretary respectively.
