\u201cIt is an irony that the people of Tulunadu, who once saw divinity in nature and lived a simple life, are now turning towards extravagance,\u201d observed Mr. Sadananda B. Mundaje, retired Second Division Assistant of SDM College and amateur writer.
He was speaking after inaugurating \u201cTulubere Aati,\u201d a special programme on Tulu culture, organized jointly by the Department of History and Tulu Sangha of Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara (Autonomous) College, Ujire, on August 13. The event was inaugurated by lighting the lamp and performing chennemane, a traditional Tulu game.
Mr. Mundaje noted that every ritual and belief in Tulunadu, from spirit worship (daivaradhane) to traditional practices, has a scientific foundation. However, modern practices have layered these customs with unnecessary grandeur. \u201cOur elders found God in simplicity and nature. We too must shed extravagance and embrace the simplicity they followed,\u201d he added.
Presiding over the programme, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce, Ms. Shakunthala, expressed concern that local cultures are being overshadowed by growing fascination for Western traditions.
Assistant Professor of History Ms. Abhijna Upadhyaya, student coordinator Ms. Gouravi, and students of the department were present.
Dr. Sanmathi Kumar, Head of the Department of History, welcomed the gathering and delivered the introductory remarks. The programme began with a prayer by Srushti and team. Nikhil, a first-year BA student, proposed the vote of thanks, while Sushmitha and Pratiksha, final-year BA students, compered the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
