Established in 1966
The Department of Mathematics strives to empower students with the knowledge and skills to understand and apply the universal language of science: Mathematics. As part of the B.Sc. program, the department integrates practical components into each unit of every paper, ensuring hands-on learning. The department’s association, Sigma Association, fosters a collaborative academic environment through engaging workshops, competitions, and seminars. Additionally, the unique Maths Clinic programme serves as a platform for discussions, mentoring, and expert talks on mathematics and its interdisciplinary applications.

Webinars and Motivational Talks

  • Department of Mathematics and IQAC in association with Manipal Institute of Technology organized One Day National Seminar on “Computational Mathematics: in Navigating Complex Real World Issues"  on 29th August 2024.
  • One day National seminar was organized on “Scientific Heritage of India in association with Dept. of Physics, Dept. of Sanskrit, and Centre of Excellence for Indian Knowledge Systems, IIT Kharagpur with support of AICTE-IKS division New Delhi, Physics Teachers association of Mangalore University on 26-02-2024.
  • Organized a webinar on "Mathematics and Common Sense" in association with Pilikula Regional Science Centre, Mangalore, on 9th December 2022.
  • Under MoU  the Department of Mathematics organized a webinar on “ALGORITHMS AND MATHEMATICS” in Association with the Department of Mathematics, St. Joseph Engineering College, Mangaluru on 12/02/2022 in Online mode.
  • Hosted a motivational talk on "Indian Culture and Its Significance in Real Life" by Mr. Thirumalesh Rao N. K on 3rd November 2022 under the SDM Social Responsibility Initiative.
  • Arranged a program on "Bhagavad Gita and Life Values" by Dr. Ramachandra Purohit, Assistant Professor, Department of Sanskrit, on 13th December 2021 as a part of its social responsibility efforts.

 Workshops and Skill Development

  • On 10-02-2024  a workshop on “ Know about-M.S.Word “ was organized in Computer Lab. Mr. SatheeshChandra P.D was the Chief Guest of the Programme, he emphasized the importance of the computer skills in getting an employed in IT Industry.
  •  Conducted a 20-day workshop on Python programming to enhance technical skills.
  • Hosted a district-level workshop, "Unique Workshop for 8th to 10th Std Students of Belthangady, Puttur, and Bantwal," on 9th February 2012.
  • Organized a “One-Day Workshop on Mathematics and Origami” for B.Sc. students on 7th March 2013.
  • Conducted a one-day program for National Mathematical Year (NMY) 2012 on 14th December 2012.

  • Ms. Akshatha B has delivered a talk on “Matrices and its applications in daily life” as a part of  “Expand Lecture Series” at SDM Secondary High School, Ujire on 30-12-2024 
  • Ms. Akshatha B has delivered a talk on “History of Graph Theory and it’s Applications in Real Life” as a part of “Expand Lecture Series” at SDM High School, Belal on 19-12-2024.
  • share lecture series programme arranged to SDM Kannada Medium  School, Dharmasthala. HOD Mr. B.Ganesh Nayak delivered a talk on “Easy Mathematics on 3/11/2023.  
  • Mr. B.Ganesh Nayak has delivered  a talk on ‘EASY –MATH’ Techniques’ to Government High School students of Badanaje village, Belthangady Taluk under Share lecture series programme on 23-12-2021.
  • B.Sc. students gave a demonstration on mathematical models to pupils of SDM State English Medium School, Ujire, on 24th July 2020.
  • Conducted a guest talk on “Application of Matrices” by Ms. Akshatha, B., for 8th Std. students of SDM Kannada Medium School, Belal, on 18th February 2020.
  • Guided high school students in preparing three mathematics projects under the "SDM Incubator Program" from 31st March to 5th April 2017.

  • Organised a guest lecture on “Matheamtics is  the Language of Universe” by Dr. Harsha A.J  Assistant Professor in Mathematics, St. Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangaluru, on the eve of National Matheamtics Day celebration on 12-02-2024.
  • Organized the a Guest Lecture on “ Application of Mathematics in Engineering” by Dr. Subrahmanya Bhat, Assistant Professor, SDMIT College, Ujire on 01 September 2023.
  • Organized guest lecture by Prof. T. Prakash Prabhu on the topic “Maths, Music and Fun” was organized on 26-11-2021.
  • Hosted a guest talk by alumnus Mr. Narashima Shenoy, Senior Principal Engineer at Collins Aerospace, Bangalore, on "The Relevance of Mathematics in Industry" on 7th December 2019.
  • Inaugurated the “SIGMA Association” with a guest lecture on "Number Theory – Results on Quotient Residues" by Dr. Shivaraj Kumar from NIT Mysore on 10th July 2019.

Special Initiatives and Add-on Courses

  • On 10-02-2024 a Workshop on Know about- Google Suit was organized in Computer Lab. Mr. SatheeshChandra P.D was the Chief Guest of the Programme.
  • Organized a one-day workshop “Learn Math through Origami” to commemorate the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, where Dr. Adelaide D’sa demonstrated constructing mathematical models through paper folding on 22/12/2022.
  • Conducted an add-on course on SCILAB & MAXIMA for B.Sc. students on 8th January 2020, where 25 students successfully completed the program under the guidance of Ms. Akshatha, B., and Ms. Poojitha Varma Jai

  • Ganesh Nayak B, published in the Asian Journal of Multimedia Research (UGC recognized) with an impact factor of SJIF 2013, 4.708, focuses on advancing teaching, learning, and research through the introduction of General Mathematics.
  • Ganesh Nayak B, featured in Pertinent Probes – Research Articles (ISBN: 978-93-84539-12-2), highlights the empowerment of knowledge through skill development in this multidisciplinary work.
  • Ganesh Nayak B, published in Innovation and Digitalization – Strategies for Global Collaboration (ISBN: 978-93-84734-83-1) by St. Agnes College, Mangalore, examines the impact of digital transformation on higher education in leading degree colleges of Belthangady Taluk.
