This beautiful Chola sculpture of Vishnu is Trivikrama, also known as Vamana, Vāmanadeva, Urukrama, Upendra, Dadhivamana, and Balibandhana. He is the fifth avatar of Vishnu and the first avatar in the Treta Yuga. In the cosmic tale of Trivikrama, Lord Vishnu, in his mighty form with eight arms, spans the universe in three steps. Each hand holds a symbol of divine power: the Chakra, sword, arrow, conch, shield, bow, and a raised arm offering fearlessness. His serene face embodies cosmic wisdom, while the posture of his footstep across the universe reminds us of the eternal balance between creation and destruction. A beautiful story of humility, devotion, and divine justice. The Trivikrama form shows Vishnu in a powerful posture standing on the lotus pedestal with two arms holding one foot while the other foot is raised as if stepping across the universe. The sculpture culminates with Vamana holding a kamandalu (water pot) in the lower right, symbolizing purity and the sustenance of life. To the lower left, Asura King Bali stands humbly, his posture one of submission and devotion, while beside him is his wife, Vindyavati, who watches with a heart full of grace and understanding.
